The Douglas DC-7C, also known as the “Seven Seas,” was the ultimate development of Douglas’s piston-engined airliners before the jet age.
Delivered to Sabena (Belgian World Airlines) in the late 1950s, the DC-7C offered long-range capability ideally suited to the airline’s prestigious transatlantic and intercontinental routes.
Sabena’s DC-7Cs were equipped with four powerful Wright R-3350 Duplex-Cyclone radial engines and featured a lengthened fuselage, extended wingtips, and greater fuel capacity compared to earlier DC-7 variants.
These improvements allowed nonstop flights between Brussels and New York, placing Sabena on par with the major international carriers of the era.
Passengers enjoyed a pressurised cabin with comfortable seating, stylish Belgian service, and the quiet luxury that Sabena was known for.
Though the arrival of the Boeing 707 soon eclipsed piston airliners, the DC-7C remains remembered as a symbol of Sabena’s postwar expansion and transatlantic ambitions.
