Flyhawk 1/700 HMS Campbeltown Destroyer 1942 # 1105
HMS Campbeltown (I42), a British destroyer, gained legendary status for its daring and audacious role in Operation Chariot during World War II.
Originally a U.S. Navy destroyer (USS Buchanan), it was transferred to the Royal Navy as part of the Lend-Lease agreement.
Commissioned in 1940, HMS Campbeltown played a pivotal role in one of the most daring and heroic missions of the war.
In March 1942, HMS Campbeltown was chosen as the centerpiece of Operation Chariot, a raid on the heavily fortified German-occupied drydock at Saint-Nazaire, France.
The ship was specially modified for the mission, with explosive charges placed in its bow to be detonated upon impact.
The audacious plan was to ram the ship into the gates of the drydock, allowing commandos to destroy the facility, preventing the use of the drydock by the German navy for their large battleships.
On the night of March 28, 1942, HMS Campbeltown, under the command of Lieutenant Commander Stephen Halden Beattie, and a group of commandos successfully executed the mission.
Despite facing heavy enemy fire, they rammed the ship into the dock gates as planned. The explosion caused extensive damage and delayed German naval operations significantly.
Although the raid resulted in the capture of many British and Commando participants, it was considered a strategic success.
The bravery and sacrifice of the crew of HMS Campbeltown and the commandos involved in Operation Chariot have been celebrated as a shining example of British heroism during World War II.
The ship's role in this daring mission remains one of the most iconic moments in naval history, and HMS Campbeltown's legacy lives on as a symbol of courage and determination in the face of overwhelming odds.
