The FV103 Spartan is a compact, fast, and highly adaptable member of the British CVR(T) (Combat Vehicle Reconnaissance (Tracked)) family, designed to operate alongside frontline reconnaissance units.
Introduced into British Army service during the 1970s, the Spartan was developed primarily as an armoured personnel carrier capable of transporting small specialist teams such as reconnaissance patrols, engineers, and command elements across demanding terrain.
This variant features additional armour protection and is fitted with a Heavy Barrel (HB) machine-gun turret, significantly enhancing survivability and close-range defensive capability while retaining the Spartan’s trademark mobility.
The extra armour reflects later operational upgrades driven by real-world combat experience, particularly in peacekeeping and expeditionary operations where improved crew protection was essential.
Powered by a lightweight aluminium hull and a high power-to-weight ratio, the Spartan excels in rapid deployment and manoeuvrability, allowing it to keep pace with other CVR(T) vehicles such as Scimitar and Scorpion.
Despite its small size, the Spartan proved highly versatile and served with British and allied forces in multiple theatres, including Northern Ireland, the Balkans, and the Middle East.
