During the Vietnam War, US Army bases across South Vietnam were rapidly constructed to support the growing presence of American military personnel.
Among the most common structures were temporary dormitories—simple, functional living quarters designed to house troops in often harsh and unstable environments.
These dormitories typically consisted of lightweight wooden or metal frame huts, often referred to as "hooches," covered with corrugated metal roofing or canvas.
Raised on stilts to prevent flooding and improve ventilation, many were lined with sandbags for protection and featured makeshift comforts like mosquito nets, fans, and improvised shelving.
While spartan, these structures provided a crucial sense of rest and routine amid the chaos of war.
Representing a vital part of base life, these temporary quarters were not only shelters but symbols of the adaptability and resilience of American forces during one of the most challenging conflicts of the 20th century.
