Gecko Models 1/35 US Navy Patrol Air Cushion Vehicle (PACV) [Late Production] # 0101
The US Navy Patrol Air Cushion Vehicle (PACV) [Late Production] was a high-speed, amphibious hovercraft used primarily during the Vietnam War for riverine and coastal operations.
The late production models of the PACV were designed to improve upon earlier versions with enhanced reliability, increased armor, and better weapon systems.
These vehicles could traverse a variety of terrains, including water, marshes, and muddy areas, making them highly versatile in the challenging environments of Vietnam.
Equipped with a powerful turbine engine, the PACV could reach speeds of up to 60 knots (about 69 mph) over water, giving it the ability to quickly deploy troops, conduct reconnaissance, and perform search-and-destroy missions.
The late production PACVs were typically armed with a .50 caliber M2 Browning machine gun and a 7.62mm M60 machine gun, both mounted on the deck to provide substantial firepower against enemy forces.
Additionally, the craft was often equipped with grenade launchers and could carry small contingents of troops for quick insertions.
The PACV's ability to move seamlessly between land and water without the need for roads or docks made it an invaluable asset in the riverine warfare of the Mekong Delta, where dense jungle and extensive waterways posed significant challenges for conventional military vehicles.
Despite its effectiveness, the PACV was relatively few in number and was used in specialized operations where its unique capabilities were most needed.
Its legacy is remembered as an innovative approach to the complex and dynamic combat environments encountered during the Vietnam War.
