The Lotus 79 (1978 Grand Prix Winner) is one of the most revolutionary and dominant cars in Formula One history, representing the peak of ground-effect aerodynamics and a defining moment in motorsport engineering.
Developed by Team Lotus, the Lotus 79 was an evolution of the earlier Lotus 78, but refined to fully exploit aerodynamic ground effect.
Using sculpted venturi tunnels along the car’s underside and sliding skirts to seal airflow, the Lotus 79 generated unprecedented levels of downforce without the drag penalties of large wings.
The result was staggering cornering speed and stability, leaving rivals struggling to keep pace.
Driven by Mario Andretti, the Lotus 79 dominated the 1978 Formula One season, winning six Grands Prix and securing both the Drivers’ World Championship for Andretti and the Constructors’ Championship for Lotus.
Team-mate Ronnie Peterson also achieved multiple victories, underlining the car’s overwhelming performance advantage.
