The 1993 Subaru Impreza – Memorial Bettega represents one of the earliest and most important appearances of the Impreza in international rallying, marking the beginning of Subaru’s rise to World Rally Championship dominance during the 1990s.
The Memorial Bettega Rally, held annually in Italy, was traditionally used by manufacturers as a proving ground for new cars, drivers, and technical developments.
In 1993, Subaru entered the newly developed Impreza Group A, beginning the transition away from the ageing Legacy and signalling a new era for the team.
Compact, lighter, and more agile, the Impreza was immediately recognised as a perfect platform for top-level rally competition.
Equipped with Subaru’s trademark turbocharged flat-four engine and symmetrical all-wheel drive, the 1993 Impreza demonstrated excellent traction, balance, and durability on mixed and gravel surfaces.
Although still in its early development phase, its performance at events like the Memorial Bettega showed huge potential—potential that would soon translate into world titles and legendary status.
