I.J.N. 2nd Torpedo Squadron Battle of the Philipine Sea June 1944
During World War II, the Imperial Japanese Navy's Shimakaze (Island Wind) was an experimental destroyer that was supposed to be the lead ship in a new "Type C" destroyer class.
She was the only destroyer with 15 torpedo tubes, each capable of firing the Type 93 "Long Lance" torpedo with a range of 610 mm (24 in).
The ship was also used as a testbed for a massively powerful, high-temperature, high-pressure steam turbine capable of producing 79,240 horsepower (59,090 kW).
This made her one of the world's fastest destroyers: her design speed was 39 kn (72 km/h; 45 mph), but she achieved 40.9 kn (75.7 km/h; 47.1 mph) during trials.
