The USS Essex (CV-9) was the lead ship of the famous Essex-class aircraft carriers, one of the most important and numerous classes of carriers ever built by the United States Navy.

Commissioned in 1942 during the height of the Second World War, she became a cornerstone of American naval power in the Pacific.
