The McDonnell-Douglas F-4 Phantom is a multi-role, long-range fighter with two engines and two seats optimised for operations in bad weather.
On May 27, 1958, the prototype flew for the first time, and serial manufacturing began in 1961.
The F-4 was supposed to be a single fighter at first, but from 1955 onwards, the design development was focused on satisfying the US Navy's requirement for a new deck fighter.
The F-4 Phantom proved to be a very successful machine, with various versions being built, as well as exports to many nations and licence production.
The initial variants are designed for fighter-bombers and are designated A to D. The F-4E is a long-range fighter that has been built since 1967.
The RF-4B, RF-4C, and RF-4E reconnaissance versions were also developed.
The F-4F and F-4G Wild Weassels are the most recent models, which are electronic warfare planes meant to combat enemy radars.
The F-4 was used in the Vietnam War, Middle East conflicts (1967, 1973), and the Iran-Iraq War (1980-1988).
A total of 5,057 F-4 Phantoms were produced.
