Persian Heavy Infantry formed the disciplined backbone of the Achaemenid Empire’s vast armies, serving from the reign of Cyrus the Great through to the wars against Greece in the 5th century BC.
Unlike the lighter troops drawn from subject nations, these soldiers were better equipped, better trained, and relied upon to hold the battle line.
Typically armed with spears, large wicker shields, and short swords, Persian Heavy Infantry wore quilted or scale armour that offered protection while allowing mobility.
Their distinctive shields and patterned clothing reflected the empire’s wealth and craftsmanship, while also providing a recognisable and intimidating presence on the battlefield.
Used to secure key positions and support elite units such as the Immortals, Persian Heavy Infantry played a crucial role in major campaigns across Asia Minor, Mesopotamia, and the eastern Mediterranean.
They exemplify the organised military power that enabled Persia to dominate much of the known world for over two centuries.
