Following an agreement signed in 1956 between Germany, Italy and France, a work group proceeded to elaborate the specifications of a medium tank. Germany and France collaborated on the same project but the agreement failed after a series of three-part trials involving 10 tanks and each country proceeded to manufacture its own material. While Germany manufactured the Leopard I, France manufactured its own AMX30.
In 1979 an upgrading programme was implemented at the Roanne arsenal. It was aimed at developing the AMX30 with consideration of the recent technological improvements in tanks. The AMX30 B2, originally commissioned in 1982, was used to a considerable extent in 1991 during operation DAGUET in the Gulf War. It featured major firing operation improvbements, with a laser rangefinder, electronic calculating equipment and low-light tv. Important mechanical improvements were also made in the field of transmission amongst others.
