The Focke-Wulf Fw 190D-9, an early production model of the "Dora" series, was a high-performance German fighter introduced in late 1944.
It was a derivative of the earlier Fw 190 designs, optimized for high-altitude operations and powered by the liquid-cooled Junkers Jumo 213A engine, which replaced the radial engines of earlier variants.
This gave the D-9 a top speed of approximately 685 km/h (426 mph) and improved performance at altitude, making it a formidable opponent for Allied fighters like the P-51 Mustang and Spitfire.
The early production Fw 190D-9 featured a streamlined fuselage, elongated nose to accommodate the Jumo engine, and an MW 50 water-methanol injection system for short bursts of increased power.
It was armed with two 20 mm MG 151/20 cannons in the wings and two 13 mm MG 131 machine guns above the engine cowling, offering a potent combination of firepower and agility.
Initially deployed in late 1944, the D-9 served as both an interceptor and a ground-attack aircraft, often tasked with defending German airspace against Allied bombing raids.
Its excellent climb rate and handling characteristics made it one of the Luftwaffe's most capable piston-engine fighters during the final stages of World War II.
