The Mikoyan MiG-21MF is an advanced variant of the MiG-21 fighter family, developed during the late Cold War to provide improved performance and combat capability.
Designed by the Mikoyan-Gurevich Design Bureau, the MiG-21MF featured a more powerful engine, upgraded avionics, and enhanced weapon options compared to earlier versions.
The aircraft was widely operated by the Polish Air Force, where it served as a frontline interceptor and fighter throughout the 1970s and 1980s.
In Polish service, the MiG-21MF was tasked with airspace defence, interception, and pilot training duties, operating from both permanent air bases and dispersed wartime locations.
Equipped with a supersonic delta-wing design, the MiG-21MF offered high speed, rapid climb performance, and excellent handling at altitude.
Its armament typically included air-to-air missiles and an internal cannon, providing effective capability against both aerial targets and limited ground objectives.
The MiG-21MF became a cornerstone of Poland’s Cold War air defence network and remains an iconic example of Warsaw Pact fighter aircraft, noted for its simplicity, reliability, and widespread international service.
