The Nakajima J1N1-S "Gekko" (meaning "Moonlight") was a Japanese twin-engine aircraft developed during World War II, primarily used by the Imperial Japanese Navy as a night fighter.

By 1945, the Gekko had evolved into a formidable aircraft adapted to counter Allied bombers and night raids, especially in the Pacific Theater.

Originally conceived as a long-range reconnaissance aircraft and bomber escort, the J1N1's design featured a sleek, elongated fuselage, twin radial engines, and a distinctive twin-tail configuration.

However, it found its true calling as a night fighter after a series of modifications.

The J1N1-S variant, developed around 1943, was equipped with oblique-firing 20mm Type 99 cannons—mounted in a "Schräge Musik" arrangement that allowed it to attack enemy bombers from below and behind, a tactic that proved particularly effective against B-29 Superfortresses.

By 1945, the Gekko had become one of Japan's primary night fighters, operating primarily in defense of the Japanese home islands.

The aircraft was powered by two Nakajima Sakae 21 engines, each producing around 1,130 horsepower, enabling it to reach speeds of up to 315 mph (507 km/h) with a range of approximately 1,250 miles (2,010 km).

Its design emphasized endurance and firepower over speed and agility, making it well-suited to its night interception role.

Despite its strengths, the Gekko faced significant challenges by 1945.

The increasing presence of advanced Allied aircraft, such as the P-61 Black Widow, and the overwhelming numerical superiority of Allied forces made its operations perilous.

Nonetheless, the Nakajima J1N1-S "Gekko" remains notable for its role as one of Japan's more successful night fighters during the later stages of the war.
