The Vought F-8E Crusader was a supersonic carrier-based fighter developed for the United States Navy during the Cold War.
Designed and built by Vought, the Crusader became widely known as “The Last of the Gunfighters” due to its emphasis on cannon armament at a time when air-to-air missiles were becoming dominant.
The F-8E variant introduced significant improvements in avionics, radar capability, and weapon integration, making it particularly effective in air-to-air combat.
During the Vietnam War, F-8E aircraft achieved numerous confirmed aerial victories against North Vietnamese MiG fighters, earning the informal title “MiG Killers.”
Notably, the Crusader achieved one of the highest kill-to-loss ratios of any U.S. fighter aircraft in the conflict.
A distinctive feature of the Crusader was its variable-incidence wing, which allowed for improved low-speed handling during carrier take-off and landing while maintaining optimal airflow at high angles of attack.
Armed with four 20 mm cannons and capable of carrying air-to-air missiles, the F-8E combined speed, manoeuvrability, and firepower.
The Vought F-8E Crusader remains an iconic naval fighter, remembered for its combat performance, carrier operations, and successful record in air-to-air engagements during the Vietnam War.
