The General Dynamics EF-111A Raven was a specialised electronic warfare aircraft developed from the F-111 airframe to provide powerful airborne radar jamming and battlefield support.

Entering service in the late 1970s, the EF-111A replaced the aging EB-66 and became a vital asset in suppressing enemy air defences during high-risk strike operations.

Retaining the distinctive variable-geometry (swing) wing design of the F-111 family, the Raven combined high-speed, low-level penetration capability with advanced electronic countermeasures.

Its primary mission was to disrupt and jam hostile radar systems, protecting strike aircraft by degrading enemy detection, tracking, and missile guidance capabilities.

Instead of conventional strike weapons, the EF-111A carried sophisticated electronic warfare systems housed within a large canoe-shaped radome beneath the fuselage.

The aircraft was operated by a two-person crew seated side-by-side — a pilot and an electronic warfare officer — who worked together to manage flight operations and complex jamming systems.

The EF-111A saw notable service during Operation Desert Storm, where it played a crucial role in neutralising Iraqi air defence networks.

Impressively, no EF-111A was ever lost to enemy fire during combat operations, underscoring both its effectiveness and survivability.

Nicknamed the “Spark Vark,” the EF-111A Raven remains one of the most capable dedicated electronic warfare platforms of its era and a significant chapter in Cold War and Gulf War aviation history.
