The RMS Titanic was one of the most famous ships in history, symbolising both the height of early 20th-century engineering and one of its greatest tragedies.
Built by Harland and Wolff for the White Star Line, Titanic was launched in 1911 and was, at the time, the largest and most luxurious ocean liner ever constructed.
Design and Luxury
Titanic was designed to offer unmatched comfort and elegance:

- Advanced safety features for the time, including watertight compartments
- Capable of carrying over 2,200 passengers and crew
It was often described as “unsinkable,” reflecting confidence in its design.
The Maiden Voyage
On April 10, 1912, Titanic departed Southampton on its maiden voyage to New York. Four days later, on April 14, it struck an iceberg in the North Atlantic.
The damage caused multiple compartments to flood, leading to the ship’s eventual sinking in the early hours of April 15.
The Disaster
The sinking of Titanic became one of the deadliest maritime disasters in peacetime:
- Over 1,500 people lost their lives
- Insufficient lifeboats and inadequate emergency procedures worsened the tragedy
- The event shocked the world and led to major changes in maritime safety laws
Legacy
The loss of Titanic led to lasting reforms, including:
- Improved lifeboat regulations
- Continuous radio monitoring for distress signals
- The establishment of the International Ice Patrol
Today, Titanic remains a powerful cultural and historical symbol, representing both human ambition and the importance of safety at sea.
