Hong Kong Models 1/48 Avro Lancaster B Mk.III Dambuster # 01F006
Operation Chastise was a high-risk bombing raid carried out by the Royal Air Force on the night of 16/17 May 1943 against the Möhne, Edersee, and Sorpe dams in the Ruhr Valley in Germany.
The raid was led by Wing Commander Guy Gibson, 617 Squadron, and involved 19 specially modified Lancaster bombers.
The aircraft were equipped with a new weapon called the "bouncing bomb", which was designed to skip across the water and hit the dam wall below the waterline.
The raid was ultimately successful, causing widespread flooding and damage to German industrial plants and infrastructure.
However, 8 aircraft were lost with 53 aircrew killed and 3 aircrew taken prisoner.
While the raid was considered a major success for the RAF, the designer of the "bouncing bomb", Barnes Wallis, was appalled at the loss of aircrew.
The HK Models Lancaster kit - now in 1:48 scale - remembers the daring raid with markings for Guy Gibson's aircraft.

| Short Description | The Avro Lancaster B Mk.III Dambuster refers to a specialized variant of the Avro Lancaster bomber used by the Royal Air Force (RAF) during World War II. The "Dambuster" designation specifically applies to aircraft modified for Operation Chastise, a mission in May 1943 aimed at destroying dams in the Ruhr Valley using specially designed bouncing bombs. The Avro Lancaster B Mk.III Dambuster featured several modifications for this specific mission. Developed by Barnes Wallis, the bouncing bomb, officially known as Upkeep, was designed to skip over the water and strike the dam wall before sinking and exploding underwater. To accommodate these bombs, the Lancaster's bomb bay doors were modified, and a specialized aiming system was installed. The most famous squadron associated with the Dambusters is 617 Squadron, led by Wing Commander Guy Gibson. On the night of May 16-17, 1943, Lancasters from 617 Squadron carried out Operation Chastise, successfully breaching the Möhne and Eder dams, among others. The mission showcased the precision and ingenuity of the RAF's bomber crews. The Avro Lancaster, in general, was one of the most iconic and successful bombers of World War II, known for its large bomb-carrying capacity, long-range capabilities, and effectiveness in various strategic bombing campaigns. The Dambuster variant stands out as a testament to innovation in military aviation during this critical period in history. |
