The A10 Mk.Ia Cruiser Tank, also known as the Cruiser Tank Mk II, was an early British cruiser tank developed in the late 1930s as a heavier and better-protected successor to the earlier A9 cruiser tank.
Designed to support fast-moving armoured formations, the A10 featured increased armour protection while maintaining the mobility expected of cruiser-class vehicles.
Armed with a 2-pounder (40 mm) anti-tank gun and supported by machine guns for close defence, the A10 Mk.Ia was intended to engage enemy armour and provide fire support during rapid manoeuvre operations.
Although the additional armour improved survivability, it reduced the tank’s speed compared to earlier cruiser designs.
The A10 Mk.Ia saw combat during the early stages of the Second World War, including service with the British Expeditionary Force in France in 1940 and later in the North African campaign.
While quickly overtaken by more advanced designs, it played an important role in the development of Britain’s early-war armoured forces.
