The Cruiser Tank Mk.I (A9) was one of the first cruiser tanks developed for the British Army in the mid-1930s, designed to combine mobility with effective firepower for fast-moving armoured operations.
Armed with a 2-pounder (40 mm) anti-tank gun in the main turret, the A9 was intended to engage enemy armour while advancing rapidly across the battlefield.
A distinctive feature of the A9 design was its two small auxiliary machine-gun turrets mounted at the front of the hull, providing additional defensive firepower against infantry.
Powered by a petrol engine and built with relatively light armour, the Cruiser Tank Mk.I prioritised speed and manoeuvrability over heavy protection.
The A9 saw active service during the early years of the Second World War, including operations in France with the British Expeditionary Force in 1940 and later in the North African campaign.
Although quickly superseded by more advanced cruiser tanks, the Cruiser Tank Mk.I played an important role in shaping Britain’s early armoured warfare doctrine.
