IBG Models 1/72 Gotha Go-242B-2 German # 72576
The Gotha Go 242B-2 was a German military transport glider developed during the Second World War to support airborne and supply operations of the Luftwaffe.
Designed as a robust and versatile cargo glider, it played a key logistical role in transporting troops, weapons, vehicles, and supplies directly onto contested or undeveloped landing zones.
The Go 242 featured a distinctive twin-boom tail design with a central cargo fuselage, allowing a large rear loading door to be fitted.
This made it especially suitable for carrying bulky loads such as light artillery, motorcycles, ammunition pallets, or fully equipped infantry units.
The B-2 variant was specifically optimised for cargo transport, with internal fittings tailored for equipment rather than personnel.
Constructed largely from wood and steel tubing with fabric-covered surfaces, the Go 242 was economical to produce and could be built in large numbers despite wartime material shortages.
It was typically towed by aircraft such as the Heinkel He 111 or Junkers Ju 52, then released near the landing zone to glide silently to the ground.
The Gotha Go 242 saw operational use on multiple fronts, including the Eastern Front, the Mediterranean, and in resupply missions to isolated German forces.
In some cases, the design was even adapted into a powered transport aircraft (the Go 244) by fitting engines to the wings, highlighting the flexibility of the original airframe.
Although vulnerable once on the ground and increasingly obsolete as Allied air superiority grew, the Go 242B-2 remains an important example of Germany’s airborne logistics strategy during WWII—an aircraft designed to deliver vital supplies where conventional transport could not reach.
