The M8A1 US Landing Mat, commonly known as the Marston Mat, was a crucial piece of military infrastructure used by the United States and its allies during World War II and beyond.

Named after its inventor, Donald Bailey Marston, the matting system played a pivotal role in rapidly constructing temporary airstrips, roadways, and other logistical infrastructure in various theaters of war.

The M8A1 Landing Mat consisted of perforated steel plates that interlocked with one another.

These plates, often referred to as "pierced steel planking" (PSP), were lightweight, durable, and designed for quick assembly.

The perforations allowed for water drainage and minimized the accumulation of mud, making it suitable for use in a variety of terrains.

One of the primary applications of the M8A1 was the construction of expedient airstrips in remote or hastily secured areas.

The matting system facilitated the establishment of forward airbases, enabling rapid deployment and resupply of aircraft during military operations.
