The Handley Page Hampden TB Mk.I was a British twin-engine torpedo bomber developed from the RAF’s early-war medium bomber and adapted for maritime strike duties with Coastal Command.
Entering service in 1940, the “TB” (Torpedo Bomber) variant was modified to carry a single 18-inch aerial torpedo beneath the fuselage, transforming the slender “Flying Suitcase” into a specialised anti-shipping aircraft.
Powered by two Bristol Pegasus radial engines, the Hampden TB Mk.I combined good speed for its time with long range, making it suitable for patrol and strike missions over the North Sea and along enemy-controlled coastlines.
Crews typically operated at low altitude during torpedo attacks, flying straight and level to ensure accurate release—an extremely hazardous role in the face of concentrated anti-aircraft fire and fighter opposition.
Hampden torpedo bombers were used extensively against Axis shipping, ports, and naval targets, particularly from bases in the UK and later in northern Russia following their transfer to support Soviet operations.
Although quickly outclassed by more modern aircraft, the Hampden TB Mk.I played a vital transitional role in the evolution of RAF torpedo bombing and Coastal Command’s offensive maritime strategy during the early years of the Second World War.
