ICM 1/35 Sikorsky S-64E Skycrane Firefighting Helicopter # 53060
The Sikorsky S-64 Skycrane is one of the most distinctive and capable heavy-lift helicopters ever built, and in its S-64E form it has become a specialist tool for aerial firefighting around the world.
Originally developed by Sikorsky Aircraft in the 1960s, the Skycrane was designed as a flying crane—stripped of unnecessary fuselage weight to maximise lifting power.
Today, many S-64E aircraft are operated and modernised by Erickson Incorporated, where they are often referred to as the “Air-Crane.”
What sets the S-64E apart is its unique skeletal frame and powerful twin-engine configuration, allowing it to carry extremely heavy external loads.
For firefighting, this translates into a formidable capability: the helicopter can lift and deploy thousands of litres of water or fire retardant in a single drop, either via a fixed belly tank or a suspended bucket.
A key advantage of the Skycrane is its precision. Unlike fixed-wing firefighting aircraft, it can hover, refill from nearby lakes or reservoirs using a snorkel system, and deliver highly accurate drops directly onto hotspots.
This makes it invaluable in rugged terrain, urban interfaces, or areas where ground crews need close aerial support.
Over decades of service, the S-64E has proven itself in wildfire operations across North America, Europe, and Australia.
Its combination of raw lifting power, reliability, and pinpoint accuracy has made it one of the most trusted and recognisable firefighting helicopters in the world.
