The Audi Quattro is an iconic sports car and rally legend, introduced by Audi in 1980.

It was one of the first high-performance road cars to feature full-time all-wheel drive (AWD), a technology that revolutionized both road and rally racing.

The name "Quattro" is derived from the Italian word for "four," signifying the car's four-wheel-drive system, which became synonymous with Audi's engineering prowess.

The Quattro was based on the Audi 80 platform but was heavily modified for enhanced performance. Its most distinctive feature was its AWD system, which provided superior traction and stability, particularly in challenging driving conditions like rain, snow, or gravel.

This system gave the Quattro a significant advantage in rally racing, where it dominated the World Rally Championship (WRC) throughout the early 1980s.

Under the hood, the original Audi Quattro was powered by a turbocharged 2.1-liter inline-five engine, producing around 200 horsepower.

This engine was coupled with a five-speed manual transmission, allowing the car to accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in just over 7 seconds—a remarkable feat for its time.

The Quattro's advanced suspension system and lightweight construction further enhanced its handling and performance on both tarmac and off-road surfaces.

The Quattro's success in motorsport, particularly in rallying, is legendary. It was the first AWD car to compete in the WRC, and it quickly established itself as a game-changer.

The car's dominance was evident in its multiple WRC titles, with drivers like Hannu Mikkola, Stig Blomqvist, and Michèle Mouton behind the wheel.

Mouton, in particular, became a motorsport icon as the first woman to win a WRC event, driving a Quattro.

Beyond its rally success, the Audi Quattro also had a lasting impact on the automotive industry.

Its AWD technology set a new standard for performance cars, and Audi later incorporated the "quattro" AWD system into a wide range of models across its lineup.

The Quattro's bold, boxy design, characterized by its wide fenders and aggressive stance, has also become an automotive classic.

Today, the Audi Quattro is celebrated as a pioneering vehicle that not only redefined rallying but also helped establish Audi's reputation as a manufacturer of cutting-edge, high-performance cars.

It remains a symbol of innovation and engineering excellence, with a lasting legacy in both motorsport and automotive history.

Short Description

In 1980, during the Geneva Motor Show, the German car manufacturer from Ingolstadt presented its new two-door coupe, the Audi Quattro.

Produced throughout the 1980s, its Italian name highlights its main feature: four-wheel drive. At the time, four-wheel drive on a vehicle aimed at generating high sales figures was indeed an important innovation.

The "Quattro" guaranteed good performance combined with excellent road holding on any type of surface.

The longitudinal front engine was capable of delivering appreciable performance.

A competition version was also created, which debuted in the World Rally Championship in 1981, achieving good results.

The success of the "Quattro" continues to this day, so much so that the Italian name has become a true "brand" that identifies the entire latest range of Audi's four-wheel-drive cars.
