In the 17th century, the Crimean Tatars were a powerful Turkic-Muslim people dominating the northern Black Sea steppes as part of the Crimean Khanate, a vassal state of the Ottoman Empire.
Skilled horsemen and masters of fast-moving cavalry warfare, they played a central role in the region’s military and political affairs.
The Tatars frequently launched raids into Polish-Lithuanian, Russian, and Cossack territories, capturing slaves and spoils in what became known as the “harvesting of the steppe.”
Their light cavalry, armed with sabres, composite bows, and flintlock firearms, was renowned for its speed, mobility, and devastating hit-and-run tactics.
The 17th century marked both the height of their influence and the beginning of growing resistance from expanding powers like Russia, setting the stage for future conflicts and eventual decline.
