The Morane-Saulnier MS-406C-1 was France’s most numerous fighter aircraft at the outbreak of the Second World War, representing the backbone of the Armée de l’Air during the Battle of France in 1940.
Developed in the mid-1930s by Morane-Saulnier, the MS-406 was a modern monoplane for its time, featuring an enclosed cockpit, retractable landing gear, and an all-metal structure with fabric-covered control surfaces.
The C-1 variant was powered by a Hispano-Suiza 12Y-31 V-12 engine producing 860 horsepower, giving it a top speed of around 304 mph (490 km/h).
Armed with a potent 20 mm Hispano-Suiza HS.9 cannon firing through the propeller hub and two 7.5 mm MAC 1934 machine guns in the wings, the MS-406C-1 was well suited to short, sharp dogfights at low and medium altitudes.
While it was outclassed in speed and climb rate by the German Messerschmitt Bf 109E, the MS-406 was praised for its manoeuvrability, stable handling, and forgiving flight characteristics, making it a favourite among French pilots.
After France’s defeat, many MS-406C-1s continued service with the Vichy French Air Force, while others were operated by Finland, Switzerland, and several other nations, where they were modified and upgraded for extended use.
Despite being overshadowed by more powerful fighters later in the war, the MS-406C-1 remains a symbol of French aviation’s valiant but outmatched fight in 1940.
