The Orličan L-40 Meta Sokol is a classic two-seat training and club glider developed in Czechoslovakia during the 1950s.
Designed to support both basic instruction and more advanced soaring training, the L-40 combined robust construction with gentle, predictable flying characteristics, making it well suited to intensive gliding school use.
The aircraft features a predominantly wooden structure with fabric-covered flying surfaces, reflecting post-war European glider design practices.
Its tandem cockpit layout provides clear instructor–student communication, while the large canopy offers good visibility—an essential attribute for training circuits, winch launches, and early cross-country instruction.
In flight, the Meta Sokol is noted for its stable handling, benign stall behaviour, and forgiving nature, allowing student pilots to build confidence while learning core soaring techniques.
Although not intended as a high-performance sailplane, it offers respectable glide performance and dependable thermalling ability for its class.
The L-40 Meta Sokol saw widespread use with gliding clubs across Eastern Europe and beyond, helping to train a generation of post-war pilots.
Today, it is remembered as a significant and reliable training glider, valued for its historical importance and its role in the development of European sport and club gliding.
