The Astir CS-77 is a single-seat sailplane developed by the German manufacturer Schempp-Hirth and introduced in 1977 as a refined development of the successful Astir series.
Designed to meet Club and early Standard Class requirements, the CS-77 offered an excellent balance between performance, ease of handling, and affordability.
Built primarily from glass-fibre reinforced plastic, the Astir CS-77 features a clean, efficient wing design, effective airbrakes, and a robust airframe well suited to intensive club use.
Its forgiving flight characteristics made it particularly popular with advancing pilots, while still delivering respectable cross-country performance in thermal conditions.
The cockpit provides good visibility and a comfortable flying position, supporting longer soaring flights with reduced pilot fatigue.
Thanks to its predictable handling and solid climb performance, the CS-77 became a widely used training and competition glider across Europe during the late 1970s and 1980s.
Today, the Astir CS-77 is regarded as a classic sailplane from a transitional era in glider design—combining traditional robustness with modern composite construction—and remains respected among gliding enthusiasts, restorers, and aviation modellers alike.
