The Boeing P-26 “Peashooter” was the first all-metal monoplane fighter to enter service with the United States Army Air Corps (USAAC), marking a decisive break from the biplane era of the early 1930s.
Introduced in 1934, it combined modern construction with transitional features that reflected the rapid pace of aviation development at the time.
Featuring an all-metal airframe, low cantilever wing, and radial engine, the P-26 offered a significant performance improvement over contemporary biplanes.
However, it retained fixed landing gear, open cockpit, and external bracing wires—elements that would soon disappear as fighter design advanced.
Despite these compromises, the aircraft was fast, responsive, and popular with pilots for its agility.
Armed with machine guns and optimised for pursuit and air defence, the P-26 served as the USAAC’s frontline fighter during the mid-1930s.
Although quickly outclassed by more advanced designs such as the P-35 and P-36, it played a vital role in modernising U.S. military aviation doctrine and training.
While often informally associated with the later USAF (established in 1947), the P-26’s true operational service belongs firmly to the USAAC era.
Today, the Boeing P-26 Peashooter is remembered as a pioneering aircraft—an elegant, if transitional, fighter that ushered American air power into the age of the modern monoplane.
