The Curtiss P-36A/C, known in export service as the H-75A “Hawk,” was a single-seat fighter aircraft that marked an important transitional step in the evolution of modern combat aircraft on the eve of the Second World War.

Designed in the mid-1930s by the Curtiss-Wright Corporation, it was one of the first all-metal monoplane fighters to enter service with the United States Army Air Corps.

Powered by a radial engine and featuring an enclosed cockpit and retractable landing gear, the P-36 represented a major advance over earlier biplane fighters.

Although lightly armed by later wartime standards, it offered good manoeuvrability, pleasant handling, and respectable performance for its era.

The P-36A and P-36C served briefly with the USAAC, while the improved export variants gained far wider operational use overseas.

Under the designation H-75A, the Hawk achieved its greatest success in foreign service, most notably with the French Air Force in 1939–1940, where it proved highly manoeuvrable and effective against German aircraft.

The type was also flown by British, Finnish, Norwegian, Dutch, and Chinese forces, with Finland in particular achieving notable combat success using the Hawk well into the war years.

Though rapidly eclipsed by more powerful fighters such as the P-40 Warhawk and later Allied designs, the Curtiss P-36 / H-75 Hawk earned a solid combat reputation and played a significant role in the transition to modern fighter aviation.

Today, it is remembered as a well-balanced and successful early monoplane fighter, respected for its handling qualities and wide international service.
