Kovozavody Prostejov 1/72 H.P. Hampden Mk.I # 7221
The Handley Page Hampden Mk.I was a British twin-engine medium bomber that formed a key part of the Royal Air Force’s frontline strength at the outbreak of the Second World War.
Entering service in 1938, the Hampden was one of the RAF’s three principal bombers alongside the Wellington and Whitley, and was notable for its distinctive, narrow fuselage which earned it the nickname “The Flying Suitcase.”
Designed for speed and a relatively small frontal area, the Hampden Mk.I relied on agility rather than heavy defensive armament for protection.
Its crew of four operated from a cramped interior, with manually aimed machine guns providing limited defensive coverage.
While these features soon proved inadequate against modern fighters, the aircraft performed effectively during the early years of the war.
Operationally, the Hampden Mk.I was used on bombing raids over Germany, mine-laying missions in coastal waters, and maritime strike roles against enemy shipping.
It played an important part during the difficult early bombing campaigns of 1939–1941, when RAF Bomber Command was still developing tactics and doctrine.
As the war progressed and more capable bombers became available, the Hampden was withdrawn from frontline bombing duties and reassigned to secondary roles, including torpedo bombing with Coastal Command.
Today, the Handley Page Hampden Mk.I is remembered as a bold but transitional design—an aircraft that served with distinction during a critical formative period of RAF wartime operations.
