The Ilyushin Il-2M, feared by German ground forces and famously nicknamed “Black Death,” was a definitive development of the legendary Soviet Shturmovik ground-attack aircraft of the Second World War.
Entering frontline service from 1942 onward, the Il-2M incorporated crucial improvements based on harsh combat experience on the Eastern Front.
Most notably, the Il-2M introduced a fully integrated rear gunner’s position, replacing the earlier improvised arrangements.
This addition dramatically increased survivability against fighter attacks, transforming the Il-2 into a true two-seat combat aircraft.
The airframe retained its unique armoured “bathtub” construction, which protected the pilot, engine, fuel tanks, and vital systems—earning the Il-2 its reputation as a flying tank.
Armed with a devastating combination of cannon, machine guns, rockets, and bombs, the Il-2M excelled at low-level attacks against tanks, artillery, supply columns, and troop concentrations.
Its psychological impact was immense; the sound of approaching Il-2s often caused panic among enemy soldiers, cementing the aircraft’s fearsome battlefield nickname.
The Il-2M became one of the most widely produced combat aircraft variants of the war and played a decisive role in Soviet offensive operations from Stalingrad through to Berlin.
Today, it stands as a powerful symbol of Soviet industrial strength, battlefield resilience, and the brutal air-ground warfare that defined the Eastern Front.
