The Let L-23 “Super Blanik” achieved widespread international service, becoming one of the most recognisable and respected two-seat training gliders of the Cold War era.
Developed in Czechoslovakia by Let Kunovice, the L-23 was designed to meet demanding military and civilian training requirements, and its strength and versatility soon attracted operators around the world.
With its robust metal airframe, fabric-covered control surfaces, and tandem cockpit layout, the Super Blanik proved ideally suited to intensive use.
Its exceptional structural strength allowed it to be used not only for basic and advanced training, but also for aerobatics, including loops, spins, and stall manoeuvres—capabilities highly valued by air forces and gliding schools alike.
The L-23 was exported extensively and operated across Europe, the Middle East, Asia, Africa, and the Americas, serving with both military air arms and civilian gliding clubs.
Many air forces adopted the Super Blanik as a standard trainer for developing discipline, energy management, and confidence in future fighter and transport pilots.
Civil operators valued it just as highly for its reliability, ease of maintenance, and predictable handling.
Thanks to its global reach and long service life, the Let L-23 “International” became a true ambassador of Eastern European aviation design.
Today, it remains a familiar sight at airfields worldwide and is remembered as one of the most successful and durable training sailplanes ever produced, with a legacy firmly established across continents.
