The Pilatus PC-9/A is a highly capable turboprop trainer aircraft used by the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) for advanced pilot training from 1987 until its retirement in 2019.

Built under licence in Australia by Hawker de Havilland, the PC-9/A was based on the Swiss-designed Pilatus PC-9 but featured modifications tailored to RAAF requirements, including updated avionics, ejection seats, and locally sourced components.

Powered by a Pratt & Whitney Canada PT6A-62 turboprop engine producing 950 shaft horsepower, the PC-9/A could reach speeds of up to 370 mph (593 km/h) and operate at altitudes exceeding 25,000 feet.

Its tandem-seat configuration, excellent handling characteristics, and ability to simulate a wide range of flight conditions made it ideal for preparing pilots for fast jet conversion.

The aircraft was also employed in Forward Air Control roles under the designation FAC(A) and served as the mount of the RAAF’s elite aerobatic display team, the Roulettes, thrilling audiences with precision formation flying.

Over three decades of service, the PC-9/A became a familiar and trusted workhorse of Australian military aviation, training generations of pilots who would go on to fly frontline fighters such as the F/A-18 Hornet and the F-35A Lightning II.
