The Republic P-47C-2/5 Thunderbolt represents the early operational development stage of one of the most formidable fighter aircraft of the Second World War.
Introduced in 1942, the P-47C series refined the original P-47B design and prepared the way for the highly successful later Thunderbolt variants.
Both the C-2 and C-5 variants were powered by the powerful Pratt & Whitney R-2800 Double Wasp radial engine, coupled with an advanced turbo-supercharger system.
This combination gave the Thunderbolt exceptional high-altitude performance and outstanding diving speed, qualities that made it well suited to bomber escort and high-level interception missions.
The P-47C retained the distinctive “razorback” fuselage and massive, rugged airframe that became the type’s trademark.
Armed with eight .50 calibre machine guns, it delivered devastating firepower and proved to be a remarkably stable gun platform.
Although early C-series aircraft were limited by relatively short range, they demonstrated impressive survivability, often returning to base despite heavy combat damage.
Operational experience with the P-47C-2 and C-5 highlighted areas for improvement—particularly fuel capacity and pilot visibility—but firmly established the Thunderbolt’s reputation for strength, speed, and firepower.
These variants played a vital role in transitioning the P-47 from a promising new fighter into the dominant long-range escort and fighter-bomber that would follow.
Today, the Republic P-47C-2/5 Thunderbolt is remembered as a crucial evolutionary step in the development of one of the most iconic and durable fighters of the Second World War.
