Kovozavody Prostejov 1/72 Republic P-47C-2/5 Thunderbolt with Ferry Tank # 72515
The Republic P-47C-2/5 Thunderbolt with ferry tank represents an important transitional configuration in the early combat career of the Thunderbolt.
While the P-47’s exceptional speed, firepower, and durability were quickly proven, its limited internal fuel capacity initially restricted operational range—particularly during long-distance escort missions.
To overcome this limitation, early P-47C variants were fitted with an external ferry (drop) tank mounted beneath the fuselage.
This additional fuel supply significantly extended the aircraft’s range, allowing Thunderbolts to accompany bomber formations deeper into enemy territory and improving operational flexibility during deployment and repositioning flights.
Powered by the formidable Pratt & Whitney R-2800 Double Wasp radial engine with a turbo-supercharger, the P-47C-2 and C-5 retained excellent high-altitude performance and tremendous diving speed.
The aircraft’s rugged “razorback” fuselage and massive structure made it exceptionally resilient, while its armament of eight .50 calibre machine guns provided overwhelming firepower.
Although the external tank slightly reduced performance and manoeuvrability when carried, it could be jettisoned before combat, restoring the Thunderbolt’s full fighting capability.
Experience gained using ferry tanks on the P-47C series directly influenced later Thunderbolt variants, which incorporated greater internal fuel capacity and more refined external tank arrangements.
Today, the P-47C-2/5 Thunderbolt with ferry tank is recognised as a key step in the evolution of the Thunderbolt from a short-range interceptor into one of the most effective long-range escort fighters and fighter-bombers of the Second World War.
