The Republic P-47C-5 Thunderbolt was an improved early production variant of the famous P-47, introduced in 1942 as the type began to reach operational maturity.
Building on lessons learned from the earlier P-47B and P-47C-2, the C-5 incorporated refinements that enhanced reliability, handling, and combat effectiveness.
Powered by the formidable Pratt & Whitney R-2800 Double Wasp radial engine with a turbo-supercharger, the P-47C-5 delivered excellent high-altitude performance and exceptional diving speed.
Its rugged airframe and distinctive “razorback” fuselage made the aircraft extraordinarily tough, earning the Thunderbolt a reputation for bringing pilots home even after sustaining heavy battle damage.
The P-47C-5 retained the Thunderbolt’s heavy armament of eight .50 calibre machine guns, providing tremendous firepower and making it a stable and accurate gun platform.
Although still limited in range compared to later variants, it proved highly effective in bomber escort and high-altitude fighter roles, particularly in the European Theatre.
Serving as a key stepping stone toward the later D-series Thunderbolts, the P-47C-5 helped establish the aircraft’s reputation as one of the most powerful and resilient fighters of the Second World War.
Today, it is remembered as an important developmental variant in the evolution of one of America’s most iconic combat aircraft.
