The Spitfire Mk.Vb “Over Malta” represents one of the most dramatic and hard-fought chapters in the Spitfire’s combat history.
Deployed to the embattled island of Malta in 1942, the Mk.Vb became a vital defender against relentless Axis air attacks launched by German and Italian forces determined to neutralise the strategic Mediterranean stronghold.
Often delivered under extreme secrecy—many ferried from aircraft carriers such as HMS Eagle—Malta-based Spitfire Mk.Vbs were hastily prepared and flown straight into combat.
Fitted with tropical air filters and frequently finished in improvised desert or maritime camouflage, these aircraft faced harsh conditions, limited resources, and overwhelming numerical odds.
Armed with two 20 mm Hispano cannons and four .303 machine guns, the Mk.Vb provided a much-needed boost in firepower and performance over earlier Hurricane defenders.
Although soon challenged by newer Luftwaffe fighters, skilled RAF and Allied pilots used the Spitfire’s agility and climb rate to contest air superiority and blunt bombing raids over the island.
The Spitfire Mk.Vb’s service over Malta was pivotal in turning the tide of the air battle, helping to secure the island’s survival and protect vital Allied supply routes.
Today, the “Over Malta” Spitfire is remembered as a symbol of endurance, courage, and determination—an iconic fighter flown in one of the Second World War’s most desperate and strategically important air campaigns.
