One of the most unusual and fearsome psychological weapons of ancient warfare, the Republican Roman Incendiary Swine were pigs deliberately set ablaze and driven toward enemy war elephants to cause panic and disruption.
These animals were smeared with pitch or other flammable substances, their squeals amplified by the flames, creating a terrifying spectacle on the battlefield.
Roman tacticians discovered that the unnatural sound and appearance of these flaming animals could drive elephants into chaos, often turning them against their own lines.
Used during the early Republican period, especially in conflicts with Hellenistic armies that employed war elephants, incendiary swine highlight the Romans’ willingness to use unorthodox methods for tactical advantage.
Though rarely employed due to the difficulty and cruelty involved, their occasional effectiveness earned them a place in military history as a bizarre yet ingenious form of anti-elephant warfare.
