The Nord 262 was a French-built twin-engine turboprop regional airliner that found success in the United States during the late 1960s and early 1970s, notably in service with Allegheny Commuter.
Designed for short-haul routes, the aircraft was well suited to the growing commuter airline market, where reliability, economy, and the ability to operate from smaller regional airports were essential.
Powered by Turbomeca Bastan turboprop engines, the Nord 262 offered solid performance and good short-field capability.
Its high-mounted wing and robust undercarriage made it practical for frequent operations in varied weather conditions, while the compact cabin accommodated regional passenger loads efficiently.
In Allegheny Commuter service, the Nord 262 wore the airline’s distinctive red, white, and blue colour scheme and operated feeder routes connecting smaller cities to Allegheny Airlines’ main network across the northeastern United States.
These aircraft played a key role in establishing the commuter airline model that would later become standard across North America.
Today, the Nord 262 in Allegheny Commuter markings represents an important chapter in regional aviation history and is a distinctive subject for aviation enthusiasts and scale modellers, capturing the early era of modern commuter air travel.
