Mark I Models 1/144 Avia S-199 'Bubble Canopy & Wing Guns' (2in1) (Two Kits Included) New Tool # 144200
The Avia S-199 was a post-war Czechoslovak fighter developed from leftover German Bf 109G airframes and components.
Fitted with a Jumo 211F engine and a large paddle-bladed propeller—neither originally designed for the 109—the aircraft developed a reputation for challenging handling, earning nicknames such as “Mezek” (Mule).
Despite its quirks, the S-199 played a crucial role in the late 1940s, especially as the first operational fighter of the Israeli Air Force during the 1948 War of Independence.
This version features two of the most distinctive improvements applied to certain S-199s:
Bubble Canopy
A revised, clearer canopy offering much better rearward and side visibility than the original framed 109 enclosure. This modification gave pilots a modern, open view—vital in combat where situational awareness was everything.
Wing Guns
Some S-199s were equipped with underwing MG 131 or MG 151-style gun pods (depending on production batch and field modification). These pods provided extra firepower to compensate for the limitations of the synchronised cowl guns and enhanced the aircraft’s ground-attack capability.
This kit captures these unique features with excellent detail, including:
- Enhanced bubble-style canopy for improved visibility and distinctive profile
- Detailed wing-mounted gun pods, adding accuracy and visual impact
- Correct Bf 109G-derived fuselage, tail, and wing geometry with sharp panel lines
- Highly detailed cockpit, including revised post-war instruments and seat layout
- Accurately shaped Jumo engine cowling and wide-blade propeller characteristic of the S-199
- Multiple marking options, including Czechoslovak service and early Israeli aircraft (varies by kit)
- Ideal for weathering, transitional post-war finishes, and dioramas featuring late 1940s air forces
A compelling mix of wartime engineering and post-war improvisation, the Avia S-199 “Bubble Canopy & Wing Guns” stands out as one of the most distinctive piston-engine fighters of its era — and offers a visually striking, historically rich build for modellers.
