The Volkssturm (“People’s Storm”) was a last-ditch German national militia formed in the closing months of World War II.
Officially established by Adolf Hitler in October 1944, the Volkssturm was made up of civilians—primarily older men, teenage boys, and previously unfit or exempted individuals—called upon to defend the collapsing Third Reich as Allied forces advanced on all fronts.
Largely untrained and hastily organized, Volkssturm units were often poorly equipped, wearing a mix of civilian clothing and outdated military gear.
Armed with a limited supply of rifles, Panzerfaust anti-tank weapons, or even improvised arms, their role was primarily defensive—holding cities, road junctions, and key positions during the desperate final battles on the Eastern and Western fronts.
Despite their lack of preparation and experience, some Volkssturm defenders fought with determination, driven by propaganda, fear, or a sense of patriotic duty.
Many were tragically caught in hopeless situations, especially during the brutal fighting in Berlin and other besieged cities in 1945.
The Volkssturm remains a sobering symbol of the war’s final stage—highlighting the desperation of the Nazi regime and the immense human cost of prolonged total war.
