Master Box 1/35 Deadly Raid, British Commandos Dieppe 1942 # 35252
In the early hours of 19 August 1942, Allied forces launched Operation Jubilee, a daring but ill-fated raid on the German-occupied port of Dieppe on the northern coast of France.
The operation was intended to test the feasibility of capturing a heavily defended port, gather intelligence on German coastal defences, and demonstrate Allied commitment to opening a second front in Western Europe.
British Commandos played a crucial role in the plan. Tasked with neutralising coastal artillery batteries on the flanks of the main landing beaches, they were to prevent German guns from firing on the assault force as Canadian infantry came ashore.
These Commandos, drawn from elite units trained for amphibious and demolition operations, landed under intense fire in darkness and confusion, often facing steep cliffs, barbed wire, concrete bunkers, and well-prepared German positions.
While some Commando units achieved limited success—temporarily silencing enemy gun batteries—the overall raid quickly descended into chaos.
Poor intelligence, lost surprise, and strong German resistance meant that many landing craft were destroyed before troops could disembark.
On the exposed shingle beaches of Dieppe, soldiers were pinned down by machine-gun and artillery fire, with little cover and no effective means of retreat.
By midday, the raid was called off. The cost was severe: over 3,600 Allied casualties, including killed, wounded, and captured, the majority of them Canadian, alongside British Commandos and a small number of U.S. personnel.
Many Commandos were killed or taken prisoner after exhausting ammunition and demolition charges while holding exposed positions.
Despite its failure, the Dieppe Raid provided vital lessons that shaped future Allied amphibious operations, most notably the D-Day landings in Normandy in 1944.
The importance of overwhelming fire support, specialised armour, accurate intelligence, and avoiding direct assaults on fortified ports was learned at a heavy human cost.
“Deadly Raid” captures the courage, sacrifice, and harsh reality faced by British Commandos at Dieppe—an operation remembered not for victory, but for the painful lessons written in blood that ultimately helped pave the way for liberation of Western Europe.
