Miniart 1/35 Ammo Loading (SU-85, GAZ-MM & Crew) Big Set # 36071
SU-85 – Soviet Self-Propelled Gun
The SU-85 was a Soviet self-propelled gun developed during World War II.
It was based on the T-34 tank chassis and was specifically designed to counter the threat posed by German tanks, such as the Panther and Tiger.
Design and Features
Armament: The SU-85 was equipped with an 85mm D-5S anti-tank gun, which was powerful enough to penetrate the armour of most German tanks at medium to long ranges. The gun’s calibre gave it better armour-piercing capability than the standard 76.2mm gun found on early Soviet tanks.
Armour: The SU-85 featured welded frontal armour of up to 45mm, angled to increase its effectiveness against incoming rounds. Its armour provided adequate protection against small to medium arms fire but was vulnerable to larger anti-tank weapons.
Chassis and Mobility: Built on the reliable T-34 chassis, the SU-85 retained the T-34’s mobility and durability, allowing it to operate in varied terrains. It had a V-2 diesel engine, giving it a top speed of around 34 km/h (21 mph) on-road.
Role and Combat Use
The SU-85 was designed as a tank destroyer, aiming to engage enemy armour from a distance rather than close combat. This gave Soviet forces a dedicated weapon to deal with heavily armoured German tanks.
Deployed primarily on the Eastern Front, the SU-85’s 85mm gun was its main advantage, enabling it to engage German tanks that earlier Soviet tank guns struggled to defeat.
It remained in service until the SU-100, with a 100mm gun, replaced it. The SU-85 was phased out but saw continued use in some Soviet-allied nations post-WWII.
Legacy
The SU-85 was one of the early tank destroyers that balanced mobility, firepower, and cost-effectiveness, which were critical for Soviet mass-production needs.
It contributed significantly to the Red Army's armoured capabilities in mid-WWII.
GAZ-MM – Soviet Light Utility Truck
The GAZ-MM was a Soviet 4x2 light truck, widely used by the Red Army for transport and support duties.
It was essentially an improved version of the earlier GAZ-AA, based on the Ford Model AA truck, with modifications for reliability and better utility on rugged terrains.
Design and Features
Engine and Power: The GAZ-MM was powered by a 50-horsepower four-cylinder engine, giving it a top speed of around 70 km/h (43 mph). Its simple, rugged design made it easy to repair in the field.
Payload Capacity: It could carry up to 1.5 tons of cargo, including troops, ammunition, and supplies, making it versatile for various logistical needs. Despite its light weight, it was durable and reliable, well-suited to the rough terrain encountered on the Eastern Front.
Construction: The truck had an open cargo bed with removable wooden panels, allowing it to be adapted for different cargo types, from soldiers to heavy equipment.
Role and Combat Use
The GAZ-MM was the Red Army's logistical workhorse, used for troop transport, supply distribution, medical evacuation, and even as a makeshift anti-aircraft platform when equipped with machine guns.
Its presence was crucial in maintaining supply lines, especially in the harsh conditions of the Eastern Front, where its reliability and ease of maintenance were invaluable.
In addition to direct military uses, it supported Soviet partisan units, delivering essential supplies behind enemy lines.
Legacy
The GAZ-MM exemplified Soviet design principles, prioritizing reliability, simplicity, and versatility over luxury or complexity.
This approach allowed it to be produced in large numbers and played a critical role in sustaining Soviet forces on the Eastern Front.
It remained in service throughout the war and saw use in post-war reconstruction efforts across the Soviet Union.
Summary
Together, the SU-85 and GAZ-MM represent different aspects of the Soviet military’s WWII strategy.
The SU-85 provided the Red Army with a powerful tank destroyer to counter German armoured threats, while the GAZ-MM was a logistical backbone that ensured the efficient movement of troops and supplies.
Both vehicles were crucial to Soviet success, showcasing Soviet ingenuity in adapting and producing reliable military vehicles under wartime pressures.
