The Marston Mat Landing Strip, also known as Pierced Steel Planking (PSP), was a modular metal runway system developed during World War II to rapidly construct temporary airfields in various combat theaters.
Consisting of interlocking metal panels, the Marston Mat provided a versatile solution for creating landing strips on unprepared or damaged terrain, such as grass, sand, or mud.
These metal mats could be quickly laid down and secured using minimal equipment and manpower, allowing for the rapid establishment of airfields in forward areas.
The Marston Mat system facilitated the deployment of military aircraft, including fighters, bombers, and cargo planes, providing essential logistical support and tactical airpower to ground forces engaged in combat operations.
Its adaptability and durability made it well-suited for use in diverse environments, from Pacific islands to European battlefields.
Beyond its primary function as a runway surface, Marston Mat was also employed for taxiways, parking areas, and aircraft maintenance facilities, enabling comprehensive airfield construction and operation.
