The P-47N-1RE Thunderbolt was the final and most advanced production variant of the legendary American fighter developed during the Second World War.
Designed specifically for long-range escort and ground-attack missions in the Pacific Theatre, the P-47N addressed the range limitations of earlier Thunderbolt variants while retaining the type’s renowned firepower and durability.
The most distinctive feature of the P-47N-1RE was its redesigned extended-span wing, which incorporated additional internal fuel capacity and strengthened structure.
This significantly increased operational range, enabling the aircraft to escort long-distance bomber missions over vast ocean expanses.
External fuel tanks could also be carried, further enhancing endurance without compromising performance.
Powered by the formidable Pratt & Whitney R-2800 Double Wasp radial engine, the P-47N delivered exceptional high-altitude performance, reliability, and survivability.
Its heavy armament of eight .50 calibre machine guns provided devastating firepower against both air and ground targets, making it equally effective as a fighter-escort and a fighter-bomber.
Structurally robust and heavily armoured, the P-47N-1RE was capable of absorbing significant battle damage and still returning safely to base — a trait that earned the Thunderbolt immense respect among pilots.
Entering service late in the war, it played a key role in the final Allied air operations against Japan.
