The Dassault Mirage G8-01 was an advanced experimental variable-geometry (swing-wing) fighter aircraft developed in the 1960s and early 1970s by Dassault Aviation in France.
It was part of a broader effort by Western aerospace firms to explore the benefits of variable-sweep wing designs, which allowed aircraft to optimize aerodynamic performance for both high-speed flight and low-speed handling.
The Mirage G8-01 evolved from the earlier Mirage G and Mirage G4 prototypes.
While the G4 was intended as a twin-seat strike aircraft for NATO under the Anglo-French Variable Geometry (AFVG) program, the G8-01 became a refined two-seat variant focused more on the fighter-interceptor role, incorporating advanced avionics and weapon systems.
Key Features:
- Swing-wing design, allowing the wings to pivot between high-speed (swept) and low-speed (extended) positions for better versatility
- Powered by two SNECMA Atar 9K-50 turbojet engines, providing significant thrust and a maximum speed near Mach 2
- Advanced radar and navigation systems for the time, integrated for long-range interception and all-weather capability
- Twin vertical stabilizers, a departure from traditional Mirage designs, to accommodate the variable-wing configuration
Although the Mirage G8-01 showed promise in flight testing, the program was eventually canceled in the mid-1970s due to budget constraints, shifting defense priorities, and the operational complexities of variable-geometry aircraft.
Additionally, France chose to focus its resources on the more conventional Mirage 2000 project, which proved more practical and cost-effective.
Despite never entering production, the Mirage G8-01 remains a noteworthy example of 1970s aerospace innovation, embodying the ambitions and technological experimentation of the Cold War era.
