The Star Trek media franchise's USS Enterprise (NCC-1701) is a starship.
It is the primary setting of the original Star Trek television series, as well as spinoffs, films, books, merchandise, and fan-made media.
The Enterprise is on a mission "to explore strange, new worlds; to seek for new life and new civilizations; to boldly go where no man has gone before," under the command of Captain James T. Kirk.
The Enterprise was conceived for television by Matt Jefferies, and its essential design elements – a saucer-shaped primary hull, two outset engine nacelles, and a cylindrical secondary hull – have survived multiple redesigns for television and film.
The Enterprise's filming model was repaired and shown as its successor starship, the USS Enterprise, NCC-1701-A, after it was destroyed in the third series film.
The Enterprise, which began as a vision of human spaceflight, has since become a cultural icon.
The ship impacted the design of succeeding franchise spacecraft, and the original Star Trek TV series replica has been on exhibit at the National Air and Space Museum for decades.
The Enterprise has been hailed as one of the best-designed and influential science fiction spaceships on numerous occasions.
